We all know someone who is very good at telling stories. They are the sort of people who, whether at family gatherings or with friends, are able to completely captivate their listeners and keep their attention focused on the story. This is what is known as storytelling, or the art of telling stories. In this article, we want to explain why it\u2019s important to incorporate storytelling into the classroom and why we give it such a central role in the SmartTEAM books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storytelling draws on traditional narrative techniques and appeals to the emotions of listeners or readers to foster empathy and thus create a compelling narrative. This art form, widely used in marketing as a business strategy, can be employed in schools to enrich and enhance teaching and learning processes. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Storytelling develops active listening skills and stimulates students\u2019 creativity.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting a lesson by teaching theory is not the same as starting it by telling a story. Right from the start, pupils will be motivated by curiosity and will want to find out more about the experiences of the story\u2019s protagonist. This, in turn, will enable them to maintain their attention for longer than they are used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. It fosters empathy.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the field of education, storytelling enables students to understand complex topics more easily. It is not the same, for example, to simply discuss the historical events of the Second World War as it is to begin studying it by exploring the personal experience of the renowned Anne Frank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. It fosters a closer relationship with the teacher and creates a more participatory atmosphere in the classroom.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Creating and telling stories to pupils will not only foster their curiosity but also create a relaxed atmosphere in which they will feel comfortable and willing to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like gamification, the art of storytelling is a great strategy and opportunity for meaningful learning. It is not only a valuable tool because it enables us to impart knowledge, but also because it gives us the chance to convey values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the two teaching methodologies on which SmartTEAM is based is storytelling. This educational project offers a learning experience in computational thinking and robotics through stories. In each project, pupils are guided on a journey by certain characters who encourage them to apply their knowledge and work as a team to overcome the challenges they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Susan, Tati, Eli, Artur and Milo \u2013 whose names form the acronym STEAM \u2013 are the characters who accompany the pupils from the very first book. As the years go by and they move on to new books, the illustrations show how they have grown \u2013 just like the pupils! Each has a different personality and style, with a special talent for the subject represented by their initial. Milo, for example, is good at maths. Susan excels at science. Tati, Eli and Artur specialise in technology, engineering and art respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through comic strips depicting various situations and speech bubbles in which the characters explain key theoretical concepts, students have the opportunity to explore and learn all about robotics and programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The storytelling featured in the SmartTEAM books aims, above all else, to provide an opportunity for pupils to achieve meaningful, high-quality learning through teamwork. The stories told in each project are a very important element because they provide context for learning about programming and robotics. They help us approach the learning of technology from a perspective that sees it as a tool for the benefit of others and a means of solving real-world problems, implementing new ideas and making this world a better place.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
